The Lieutenant Governor may during his time in office and in carrying out his duties, give his honorary patronage to non-profit organisations which meet certain well defined criteria. He provides, at his convenience, his official support after receiving a written request from such a body. His patronage ends when his mandate is over.
The honorary patronage therefore represents the Lieutenant Governor’s formal support to the chosen body. This mark of appreciation may vary. This could be a written message, an address, a meeting or participation to organisation’s activities. The support thus awarded does not mean that the Lieutenant Governor therefore becomes the or an official spokesperson of the organisation. Finally, the latter cannot use the patronage given by the Lieutenant Governor as a direct form of solicitation related to the financing of the organisation unless it receives a formal and exceptional acceptance from the Lieutenant Governor.
In any case, the honorary patronage is subject to the directives adopted by the Department of Canadian Heritage for all lieutenant governors.
An organisation wishing to submit a request for honorary patronage from the Lieutenant Governor must be a non-political one and be dedicated to the benefit of the Quebec community. The request must be in writing and sent to the office of the Lieutenant Governor.
