Message from the Lieutenant Governor
The Honourable J. Michel Doyon, K.C., B.A., LL.L., Ph. D., Ad. E.
Welcome to the Lieutenant Governor’s website.
The internet nowadays is a key communication tool. Almost everyone has access to valuable on-line information resources of all kinds, even if some must be read with great caution. Nevertheless, the Web allows every natural or legal person to provide information about his mandate, activities and functions.
In our British-inspired parliamentary system, lieutenant governors are called upon to exercise a number of parliamentary obligations. While the legislative and executive powers belong to the elected members of the National Assembly, to the Premier and to the members of his cabinet, the Lieutenant Governor ensures sustainability of the State.
We are fortunate to live in a democratic society. Democracy, source of individual liberty and basis of the rule of law, is a political system that we have to guard jealously and never take for granted. For my part, as long as I am called to fulfil the responsibilities of Lieutenant Governor, I plan to work towards the promotion of our political institutions and their respect. All of us, regardless of our political affiliations or allegiances, must respect our elected women and men who, mindful of their social duties, dedicate a part of their lives to public service. Their policies may be opposed, they may promote different political approaches, but we must never forget that their work is aimed towards the common good.
However, this does not lessen the Lieutenant Governor’s interest or responsibility towards the community in which he serves. While respecting his role and function, he must show his social concerns, be attentive to the needs of his fellow citizens, acknowledge their achievements and respond to their joys and sufferings. He must be generous and humble, and display compassion and empathy in dealing with others. To that end, I will pay special attention to education and social engagement, and to the concerns of our youth and to those of our most vulnerable individuals.
From my home page, you have access to a set of themes which should answer questions you may have after visiting this website.
I hope that through this site you will come to understand better the functions carried out by the Lieutenant Governor and the role he plays in our democratic system of government.
Thank you for your visit and for your interest.
Hon. J. Michel Doyon
