Lieutenant Governor’s Seniors Medal

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a nomination by an individual or an organization, the person must, at the time of the submission:

• be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident within the meaning of the Immigration Act and Refugee Protection Act (SC 2001, c 27.) and reside permanently in Québec;
  
• be aged 65 or over;
  
• by sustained voluntary action at the social and community levels, which started or was continued beyond 64 years of age, have contributed to the well-being of her or his community or the achievement of an organization’s mission.

The person or the organization, submitting the nomination, must duly complete the electronic application form.

For a nomination made posthumously, only the applications submitted within 30 months after the death will be considered.

Elements that may lead to the refusal of a nomination

• the person recommended was already presented, since 2008, with Lieutenant Governor’s Seniors Medal;
• an application form completed directly by the person recommended;
• the presentation text is too short, incomplete, or in a curriculum vitae format;
• the reproduction of a text written by the person recommended to justify the award of the medal (text must be written in the third person singular).

Procedure

All Québec residents and organizations may submit one or more nominations no later than February 1^st of each year, by completing the online form for each person recommended.

This online procedure is mandatory. In order to dedicate the adequate time to process the submissions, the form will not be available online after the deadline. Additionally, please note that no extension will be granted to transmit the application form, no matter what the reason.

When completing the form, you must consider the following:

• the award of the Medal is not automatic. If the application is accepted by the end of the selection process, the Office of Lieutenant Governor itself will inform the recipients of the Medal through an official letter and invitation. We invite you to preserve the confidentiality of every application. Acting accordingly avoids any unease, discomfort, or other inconvenience to the person or organization in the event that the application was not accepted. Discretion and caution are therefore required;
• it is very important to respect the use of accents, hyphens, upper and lowercase when filling in the form;
• fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory;
• information and texts written entirely in uppercase generate errors. Therefore, this use is not permitted and will lead to the refusal of the application form;
• give a special attention to any letter inversion and correct spelling of the first and last name at birth of the person recommended, since this information will be used as is for the recipient’s appellation;
• we remind you that you must ensure that the person recommended meets the program's eligibility criteria, particularly that of being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (SC 2001, c. 27) and residing permanently in Québec;
• in a text of maximum 750 words, written in an adequate and explanatory manner, describe in what way the actions of the person recommended correspond to the involvement criteria mentioned previously, making her or him eligible to receive the Lieutenant Governor’s Seniors Medal :
1. a text that would take the form of a curriculum vitae, a simple enumeration of volunteer activities, or a reproduction of a text written by the person recommended, will require a rewrite from you, failing which, the application may be rejected;
2. to facilitate the understanding of your text, avoid the use of acronyms or abbreviations when you refer to committees, clubs or organizations. Provide their full name and, if necessary, briefly explain their nature;
3. we remind you that it is from your text that the application will be assessed. Be clear about the terminology and deserving actions;
4. ordinarily, the citation read during the award ceremony will be expressed in the same language in which your text was submitted to the Office of the Lieutenant Governor;
• in accordance with our writing guidelines, please summarize, in a text no longer than 60 words, the significant action of the person recommended as well as the positive influence on her or his community or organization. This text would serve, when appropriate, to the presentation of the recipient during the Medal award ceremony.

Award Ceremonies

The medal will be presented to the recipients during a number of award ceremonies presided by the Lieutenant Governor.

Upon receipt of an official letter of invitation from the Chief of Staff and Private Secretary of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, each recipient must attend, in person, the ceremony to which she or he was invited in order to receive the medal. A recipient cannot be represented otherwise than posthumously.
