
Before Confederation and under both the British and the French regime, the governors and other representatives (sometimes called “lieutenant governors”) of the ruling sovereign, lived in Québec.
The democratic parliamentary system as we know it today, comprised of the Governor General, Lieutenant Governors and legislative chambers, was established in 1867 under the British North America Act, in which their respective roles and powers are enshrined.
Every Lieutenant Governors has a chapter in the illustrated book entitled L’histoire du Québec à travers ses lieutenants-gouverneurs, available at Publications du Québec outlets.
